OEM—Original Equipment Manufacturer Parts
These are also known as Genuine, Manufacturer or OEM Parts. Genuine Manufacturer Parts are built specifically for your vehicle and are designed to the precise specifications and tolerances when it was first made. Nothing compares to OEM Parts when it comes to Fit, Quality and Design.
OEM Parts are the only parts proven during vehicle development and testing to give you the intended level of protection as a whole system. Body panels match up perfectly, brakes stop as designed and high-quality materials help reduce corrosion and wear. When they are installed using factory-recommended materials and procedures, they deliver the same structural performance characteristics as the original parts.
Aftermarket, alternative or Salvage Parts
After Market Parts and/or alternative parts may not be made of the same material or to the same tolerances and specifications as OEM parts, and it is crucial to understand that they are not tested with the rest of the system during vehicle development. These parts may not be of the same quality as OEM parts and integrating them into the system could change the crash performance engineered into your vehicle. It is also important to know that failure of one of the aftermarket parts can affect the factory warranty or the terms of some extended service plans.
Chances are, this isn’t your grandpa’s car!
Modern vehicles are equipped with complex computer systems with highly advanced crash-avoidance and safety-system technologies. Vehicles are designed with more advanced high-strength steels, exotic metals and various composite materials are being used more than ever before, all in an effort to improve passenger safety.
Many consumers don’t realize that these vehicles are engineered and built as an integrated assembly of parts that work together as a single system to provide predictable performance, safety and durability in the event of collision. Today’s vehicles are put through numerous manufacturer and federal government tests to ensure all these individual parts function as a system when you need them in the real world.
